There are many webcomics in my subscribed list, but few of them are that I eagerly wait for the update. One of them is Perfect Love Doesn’t Exist or As If Love Doesn’t Exist Webtoon, the story of Siyeon, whose life was decided and altered on the day she was born. The English version of the webtoon ended early in 2025.
Siyeon’s life changed dramatically when she discovered that the family she was living with was not her own. Her parents, her fiancé, and her cousin—none of them were actually related to her. After this revelation, she couldn’t even spend a single day happily with her biological parents. Soon after, they left her. Her tragedy began when she learned that this was not an accident.
Spoilers ahead! I will not restrain and cover some major twists in the blog. So, if you don’t like spoilers, please jump to the end!
Story of As If Love Doesn’t Exist
On Siyeon’s 25th birthday, it was revealed that she was not the daughter of the prominent Donghan Kim Clan. The Kim Clan was well-known for contributing to the celebrated poetry “Midnight Sun.”
“Midnight Sun” is a renowned poem written by Siyeon Kim’s great-grandfather, who composed it in hopes of Korea’s independence from Japanese rule. It is known as national heritage.
The revelation shook her to her core. The girl her parents had brought into their home a few days ago, claiming she was her cousin, was their daughter. Eunhye Choi was Kim’s true daughter. They had been switched at birth in the hospital nursery.
Siyeon Kim, now Siyeon Choi, accepted this bitter truth and moved in with her biological parents. Soon after the revelation, her birth father fell ill and was unable to recognize her, and he passed away shortly thereafter. Sometime later, her birth mother, who was in depression, also succumbed to illness, leaving Siyeon all alone in the world once again.
On her 27th birthday, she decided to visit her parents. The house where she grew up no longer felt like hers. The people who had once loved her dearly were now surprised by her sudden visit. The man who had once been her fiancé was now the husband of another woman.
Amidst those familiar faces, Siyeon felt completely alone. No one present was someone she could call her own.
Eunhye welcomed Siyeon with a bright face while others were clearly uncomfortable. Right after an awkward dinner, alone in her room, she revealed a shocking truth: that their switching at birth was suggested by a shaman, which her grandmother agreed to. Eunhye should live under someone else’s roof until she turns 25 to live a long life.
In anger, Siyeon cursed Eunhye to be as miserable as she was. Soon after, Eunhye’s mother brought devastating news that her husband, Gwihyeon, had died in a car accident. Overcome with guilt of his death, Siyeon prayed not to wake up the next day, and two years of torment later, her wish came true when a fire claimed her life
It seemed that even the gods pitied her, so they gave her another chance to correct her regrets. When Siyeon opened her eyes, she realized she had traveled back 10 years in time.
Her Kim mother had the same love and concern for her while waking her up, as it was before Eunhye came into their life.
She used this opportunity to make things better for herself. The first change she managed in her past was to befriend Ijun, as he was the only person beside him when her Choi mother passed away.
She asked for a favor from he fiance. Gwihyeon to save her Choi father’s business, which was the reason he fell ill even before the truth about their daughter came out.
Her actions brought a lot of changes around her, which didn’t happen in her previous life. For example, Ijun stays in Korea instead of moving to the States. Eunhye & Ijun’s unplanned first meeting, and Euhye not moving to Siyeon’s home like her previous life.
Navigating her thoughts in a different direction, she came across certain realizations she had missed previously. Such as the fact that Ijun Jeong, who stood beside her always, might like her.
As time passed, Gwihyeon left for his military service, and Ijun and Siyeon became closer, spending their free time together. Before his departure, in unclear words, he confessed his feelings for her. And she promised to wait for him, like a typical girlfriend does.
A new era of emotions starts from this point onward in the As If Love Doesn’t Exist webtoon.
Her affection for her Kim parents was not like before. Taking another step towards a better future, she wanted to move out of that place before Eunhye’s arrival. For this she planned to get her grandmother’s approval, as her parents were not ready.
Smartly, she successfully got permission to move out of her house and also found the location of that monk who ignited this ‘baby swap’ scandal.
Siyeon’s intervention has altered the timeline significantly. Eunhye met Ijun early at her wedding to Gwiheon and kept in touch while he served in the military.
Meanwhile, Siyeon’s parents have moved into her grandmother’s house, claiming she is ill, and they didn’t contact her all day. She remembered this situation from her past life when her parents returned with Eunhye, but that wouldn’t happen this time, leaving her feeling unsettled.
So she decided to meet the culprit behind her tragedy. She travelled to the monastery where the monk lived. The monk was very well aware of Siyeon’s identity. Without delay, she asked the reason behind the swap.
Monk revealed that he was sorry for his mistakes, but what happened was heaven’s plan. Everything would return to its rightful place.
Every time she was upset, Ijun stayed beside her. That day, she forgot to eat lunch, and her heart was already heavy with everything that had happened. He accompanied her throughout the evening, distracting her and also making her laugh. Just “my girlfriend” from his mouth was enough to bring butterflies to her stomach.
The fear of the unknown that was bothering Siyeon came true. Her parents knew the truth. She knew this right at first glance because their behaviour towards her changed. She had a lot on her plate. Changed behaviour of her parents and the dilemma of when to reveal her relations with Ijun.
The tense and silent relationship of Siyeon with her parents, became happy like before, as the date of her shifting to another apartment neared.
Kim parents constantly worried about their inability to bring their daughter home and the properties Siyeon received from Ijun’s grandfather. They even settled the land Siyeon held before she reached legal age, ensuring that Eunhye would receive what she deserved as Kim’s biological daughter.
Siyeon understood their concerns and cooperated with them as they tried to fulfill their responsibilities towards her without losing what belonged to her. They bought an apartment for her and wired enough money to sustain her for the next five years.
It all seemed like after five years, when they could bring Eunhye to their home, they would cut all ties with Siyeon. This bitter realization struck her from time to time. However, she also knew that fate had already decided.
Ijun’s grandfather adored Siyeon, not just because she was a daughter of the Kim clan. When he learned that the land he had gifted to Siyeon was sold, he felt upset. In exchange, he offered to give her 1% of the company’s entire stock.
Siyeon seized this opportunity to inform him that she had feelings for Ijun and assured him that his eldest son would marry the daughter of the Great Kim clan. Although the grandfather misinterpreted her words, he felt relieved, and Siyeon chose not to clarify. She knew that once the truth came to light, everything would fit into place.
As Ijun and Siyeon grew closer, both families began discussing the topic of her marriage with Gwihyeon, the elder brother. Ijun was unaware of the fact that Siyeon had already declared her love for him to his grandfather. Thus, the anxiety of losing his first love to his brother, ignited the couple’s first fight. The fight eventually got resolved before Ijun returned to the based after his second leave from military.
Soon, Siyeon was ready to move into her new apartment in Seoul in the As If Love Doesn’t Exist webtoon. As soon as she earned independence from her Kim parents, she found an opportunity to get closer to her birth parents.
She applied for a part-time job at her Choi father’s company. The atmosphere was very family-like, and on the first day, she learned a lot about her Choi parents. Also, Eunhye’s rude and spoilt brat image was not hidden from anyone at the factory.
When things started going smoothly, Gwihyeon’s behavior changed. His words carried hidden meanings. Not openly, but he expressed his disapproval of Siyeon and Ijun’s relationship.
Gwihyeon learned the truth of their birth switch. Siyeon decided to face him instead of staying under constant fear and anxiety. The fear that he might hurt Yeong Jin foods, Choi father’s company. And her fear came true.
He sweetly asked her to resolve matters with Ijun, as Ijun could rival him for the Midnight Sun Corp inheritance. To protect her father from collapsing as in her past life and the peace of her Kim parents, she chose to end things with Ijun, ultimately succumbing to Gwihyeon’s dirty play.
The perspective I’ve shown to you so far is Siyeon’s. But many things are happening around her that change her future, which even she is unaware of.
Unlike other female leads, Siyeon was not forgiving unnecessarily. She knew she was wronged and stood by her hardships. That’s the trait I could absolutely relate with.
One beautiful aspect of this story is that its most enchanting moments occurred under the serenading moon. The moon witnessed both of Siyeon’s lives. It felt as though her ancestors were protecting her. Moon played a vital role in As If Love Doesn’t Exist Webtoon, for both Siyeon and her Great-grand father.
‘Under the Midnight Sun.’
